Unable to open its doors to the community as a result of COVID-19, Flushing Town Hall, like many arts institutions during these times, is facing a challenging decrease in revenue.

To offset those losses and maintain its operations, as well as a brand new catalog of free online entertainment, the venue is accepting donations through the “Step Up for Flushing Town Hall” campaign.

This weekend, the cultural institution will ramp up its fundraising efforts with the Step Up Soirée, a virtual gala that will engage and entertain audiences online.

Flushing Town Hall depends on the funds from its annual gala in order to continue its pursuit of connecting the community through global arts. All proceeds from the event will go toward the venue’s slate of programming tailored to the digital space through “FTH at Home!”

“While the world has changed, our mission has not,” said executive and artistic director Ellen Kodadek. “This year is unlike any other, and so this year’s gala will be unlike any other we have held before.

“Though we must celebrate apart from each other,” she continued, “we still will come together virtually for a fun evening of song, of dance, and of community.”

On Saturday, this year’s re-envisioned event will be streamed at 7 p.m., and is open to the public through YouTube and Facebook LIVE. Attendees are invited to dress in a favorite gown or tux if they feel like it, but even pajamas are welcome.

Details about sponsorship donation opportunities and how to register for the gala are available at flushingtownhall.org/gala.

Preceding the Step Up Soirée is a three-day “Galathon,” featuring dance, cooking and cocktail-making lessons. Participants can dust off their dancing shoes and practice their moves on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The next day, FTH teaches you how to use items in your pantry to whip up creative hors d’oeuvres, followed by a Friday mixology class.

The goal of the Step Up Soirée is not only to keep the venue alive by garnering donations to put toward payroll for staff and teaching artists, maintenance of the historic Flushing Town Hall building, pandemic technology costs and monthly bills. Flushing Town Hall also hopes to provide something positive for the community in return.

“We hope to bring our audiences, both new and old friends, some enjoyment during these uncertain times,” Kodadek explained.
