Yes, halfway through the 2019 season, life is good if you root for the New York Yankees.
A dynamic young core, a relentless offense, a bullpen among baseball’s best, and a comfortable lead in the American League East.
The goal for the Yankees in 2019 is not just about qualifying for October baseball, the goal is to find a way to bring a parade back down the Canyon of Heroes.
The Yankees have capable starting pitching. Masahiro Tanaka is a big-game pitcher and a guy you trust in a playoff start.
Domingo German has been sensational. However, with innings limits and playoff inexperience, he cannot be seen as a given for October success.
And while James Paxton has shown flashes of brilliance, he has not consistently dominated.
In other words, the Yankees need to add another starting pitcher to take this rotation to another level.
A lot of names have been thrown out in the rumor mill. Long Island native Marcus Stroman of the Blue Jays has generated a lot of buzz, and with the Mets looking to sell, maybe the Yankees could get Zack Wheeler in a deal.
Stroman and Wheeler are two solid pitchers, but the choice for Brian Cashman and the Yankees should be simple: go get Madison Bumgarner.
The goal for the Yankees is to win the 2019 World Series, so wouldn’t it be nice to add one of the best postseason pitchers ever?
Is Bumgarner as dominant as he was in 2014 when he willed the San Francisco Giants to their third title in five years? No, but he doesn’t have to be.
Even with a little extra wear and tear on his left arm, Mad Bum still possesses unbelievable qualities that would help the Yankees in the second half of the season and into October.
Bumgarner misses bats. He’s still striking out a batter an inning.
He also goes deep into games. Over his last three starts, he has the look of a pitcher that is rounding into form.
There will never be a question if the October stage or the magnitude of the moment is too big for Madison Bumgarner. There is something to be said for that playoff pedigree.
For a team that’s in the business of trying to go the distance, go out and get the best October pitcher on the market.
Don’t get cute, go get Mad Bum.
