It is with great sadness that friends and family announce the passing of our dear friend Gustavo Jorge Campello on March 5, 2019 during his sleep at 62 years of age in Forest Hills , New York. Born in Havana, Cuba on December 7, 1956, his family emigrated fleeing the cruelty and oppression of the communist Castro regime, temporarily residing in Spain while in transit to ultimately settle in Elmhurst, Queens and then Bay Ridge, Brooklyn , his adopted hometown. He was the loving son of the late Jose and Moraima Campello and leaves behind various loving cousins and close friends in the US and Spain.
He attained a degree in education from Brooklyn College and taught Spanish at Newtown High School in Elmhurst, Queens .In the 80’s he changed careers and worked in the travel industry. During his time at Cunard Cruise Line he made devoted friends and travelled on the Queen Elizabeth 2 where his passion for travel began. He also went on to work at Vista Tours, Homeric Tours and other travel agencies where he escorted groups to Israel and Asia. His knowledge of history also led him to Gray Line Tours where he was a NYC tour guide. He loved being a tour guide so much he planned on creating his own NYC tours after retiring. He later went on to work in the Social Security Administration until his passing. Gustavo volunteered for over 25 years as an usher and at the information desk for St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC and in the church’s social outreach ministries for the elderly.
He had a great passion not only for travel, but in learning languages, history, Marvel Avengers movies, relished his Cuban and Spanish heritage, and loved Gloria Estefan and Celia Cruz music. His humor, smile and generous heart will not be forgotten. God has called him home too soon, but he is now in His loving arms
. Services were offered at Hess-Miller Funeral Home followed by cremation at Fresh Pond Crematory, Middle Village. A memorial service was held in his name on Tuesday May 28th at 10am at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in the Lady's chapel and in the Salvador Church in Elche, Spain on May 15,2019.
