Last week, Councilman Eric Ulrich threw his support behind controversial mayoral candidate Bo Dietl, whose brash and outspoken style has drawn comparisons to President Donald Trump, a comparison Dietl is not particularly fond of.

In a meet-and-greet with south Queens voters that Ulrich hosted for Dietl, the councilman said that the comparisons to Trump only help Mayor Bill de Blasio in his re-election bid. Ulrich says that mayor is running his campaign against the current president, and not any of his challengers in the race.

And the mayor’s recent fundraising email seems to prove Ulrich right.

The mayor highlights a tweet from Trump before he was even elected president that calls de Blasio the “worst mayor in the United States.”

He goes on to warn voters that New York City is in danger of not being run by Republicans, but the “party of Trump,” calling the prospect terrifying.

It does appear that one of de Blasio’s campaign tactics is going to play off Trump’s unpopularity in the city by linking his GOP opponents to the current president.

We’ll see how well it works.
