While the fashion cycle keeps repeating itself, the trends follow suit this spring with an honorable nod to the 1970s. If the thought of anything in your wardrobe remotely honoring the 70’s reminds you of Laura Ingles in prairie dresses or Marcia Brady in plaid polyester pants with navy Keds, you might be pleasantly surprised when reviewing what fashion marvels have done this spring to rework the 1970’s glam era. Review the categories below to help you determine what works for your individual style and charm when creating new looks for spring. You can still be a fashion leader by keeping up with the trends while continuing to add your own signature to make your outfits unique.

Prints: Go for bigger, bolder prints this year and pair them with understated pieces. This brings attention to the color, detailing and actual artwork of the print you are wearing. Try large statement prints on long maxi skirts, blouses or dresses. Color blocking, tribal, border and novelty (animal) prints along with geometric designs were a usual sight on the modern and stylish career woman of this era.

Accessories: The accessories of the 70’s can be summed up in one word: LARGE. Large bags, sunglasses and jewelry were all the rage. Same stands true today with the oversized glass frames and hobo bags. Larger, thicker frames are being worn by both men and women, putting the eyewear industry as a major category in the fashion world. Whether you need glasses to actually see or just to accessorize, the styles are getting hotter and being seen in fashion shows all over the world. In addition to eyeglasses, floppy hats and scarves are forever loved this spring.

Jewelry: Large, long necklaces with oversized statement pieces are the classics this year that will continue to thrive long after this season is over. Try long necklaces layered with shorter ones to create an original and eclectic mix of materials and charms. Speaking of mixing, designers are showing lots of mixed and matched bangles of all colors and sizes.

Shoes: Platforms and high heel clogs are being shown this year in all styles from lace up boots to the super high platform high heels. If high platforms are a challenge for you, get some practice time in around the house. The look of the shoe will be worth it when you master walking in a high chunky heel with ease. Even though the shoe doesn’t bend when you walk, it provides an image of a longer, leaner look while it kicks you up quite a few inches taller.

Pants: Bell bottoms and wide leg pants return to the runway this spring in a variety of denim and flowing fabrics. Although the skinny jean is still hanging on, the bell bottom will forever be ringing its way down the runway. They create the illusion of a leaner, longer leg while giving flowing lines and sophistication to the overall look of the pant.

Have a blast this season going through your mama’s closet finding her leftovers from the 1970s.
