On Wednesday, Forest Hills residents anxiously awaiting the grand opening of the new store at 70-00 Austin Street – the former Barnes & Noble - flooded through the doors on the store's first day.
At approximately 21,000 square feet, the location is about one-fourth of the size of a usual suburban Target location. Formally known as a Target Express but now called a “flexible format store,” every product sold in smaller Targets is chosen specifically for that location.
“We started this urban concept in 2012,” said Target spokesperson Kristy Welker. “Since some of our top performing stores are in New York, we were looking to make more Targets available. Our new Forest Hills location was designed with the residents' needs in mind, including local city dwellers and families with kids in the neighborhood.”
Although not as fully stocked as a usual Target, the Forest Hills store has about every possible staple and product that a Forest Hills family would need. Groceries, sports merchandise, beauty products, stationary, technology products and even a CVS pharmacy.
