Queens Council on the Arts, a community-oriented organization known for sponsoring free educational, artistic, and food events in New York City, recently invited New York artists and performing arts organizations to attend its first Google Seminar on March 7, held at Astoria Kaufman Studios in Astoria.

One highlight of QCA's most recent events, the interactive Google Seminar, is part of its 2011-2012 Professional Development Workshop Series - created to help the local arts community facilitate growth, and sharpen their marketing and fundraising techniques. Attendees went away with methods to help them get more exposure using the Internet

Taught by Patrick Berlinquette, a Google AdWords Specialist at Brooklyn-based internet marketing agency, Ajax Union, the two-part presentation began with "Google 101” - a rundown of Google Apps, Google Analytics, Google Places, and Google AdWords – and an overview of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the process of improving search engine rankings through targeted online marketing.

Attendees representing creative fields in Queens learned about different types of advertising, fundamentals of the pay-per-click ad model, and the best strategies to employ to reduce AdWords expenses. One organization,

The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, greatly benefited from the informative workshop.

“Being a Google Nonprofit Grant recipient, we believe that the power of search is important to artists and others. I’m glad to see that people are becoming more aware that we do exist, through these workshops,” said Hoong Yee Lee Krakauer, QCA's Executive Director.

“Hosted by field experts, QCA’s Professional Development events are designed to help creative individuals and groups - structure, fund, and promote their projects - to maximize both exposure and success.” Krakauer added. “The Google Seminar is a valuable addition to our lineup of free events in N.Y.C., as it provides a thorough overview of online promotion through both Google Search and Google AdWords.”

Berlinquette noted that the seminars are sponsored by Ajax Union, as part of the mission to educate business owners and professionals. “We target our information to everyone in every industry, and we use examples in specific industries when we know our audience well,” he said.

“Ajax Union helps business owners and professionals learn about online marketing strategies that can take their business to the next level,” he added.

This includes teaching them about SEO, PPC, Email Marketing and Social Media, via seminars and webinars.

“We start with the basics and show how benefits can be yielded through being active and creating value online,” Berlinquette explained.

Ajax Union has been hosting marketing seminars in Brooklyn, Queens and N.Y.C. for the past year and has trained over 1,000 business owners and professionals during that time.

The next seminar will be held in Midtown Manhattan, March 27th.” (You can join at www.AjaxUnion.com/Events).

In May, QCA will host a grant writing workshop. An asset for artists and organizations looking to pursue grants for music, art, and performances, it will help attendees learn to create a compelling narrative to effectively pitch their products.

QCA will be moving to Long Island City this summer, and will be hosting workshops in the Astoria Kaufman Studios complex when construction on their site is complete.

“We look forward to being a part of local art and community gatherings,” said Krakauer.
