He was the son of the late Gus and Nellie Winters, a graduate of St. John’s Prep and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn NY. He served for two years in the Army as an artillery officer. (His standard response when asked if being in the artillery affected his hearing was “What?”). He was an active and longtime parishioner of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Ridgewood, NY. He was an architect who worked into his late seventies and delighted in mentoring younger architects. John enjoyed gardening, reading, his pipe, cheap red wine and dry martinis. He loved all children, but most especially his six grandchildren. He was known as a “baby whisperer” because his calm demeanor could quiet any crying Infant. One of his many witticisms was that he considered himself a success in life because all of his kids talked to him and they all talk to each other.
John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anne (nee Boyle), his three children Susan Doran, Stephanie Finocchio and her husband Chris, and John Doran, Jr. and his wife Amanda, as well as his six grandchildren Chris James, Nicole, David, and Veronica Finocchio and Sara and Johnny Doran.
His family expresses their sincere thanks to the outpouring of support they have received over the last several weeks. The kind words of so many people expressing their love, respect, and admiration for John have provided great solace and is deeply appreciated.
John will be waked at Hess-Miller Funeral Home in Middle Village, NY on Wednesday, August 7 from 7-9 PM and Thursday, August 8, 2-5 PM and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal on Friday, August 9 at 10:30 AM with interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
