This year, the sixth annual iteration of CrossCurrent will go virtual, with a two-part compilation of new performances at Flushing Town Hall streamed live on the venue’s Facebook page.
The first session is slated for this Friday at 7 p.m., and will feature selected works by Rourou Ye and Yuki Ishiguro. Ye, who hails from China, created her piece “The Absent Umbra” exclusively for the virtual format. The performance explores dancing with objects and shadows during a time of self-quarantine.
Founder of the New York-based Yu.S.Artistry dance company, Ishiguro is a native of Japan. He is a choreographer whose range spreads from ballet to breakdance, and with his CrossCurrent work “The Inner Light,” Ishiguro examines the human experience.
Part two of the festival takes place on July 3, with a spotlight of choreographers Barkha Patel, Chien-Ying Wang, Paul C. Ocampo, and Peter Cheng.
An Indian classical Kathak dancer, Patel offers a performance called “Aravani (or Transgender),” which follows a woman’s struggle with ostracism from her family and her journey to find a sense of belonging in society.
Wang and Ocampo, two educators at Rutgers University, will unite for “Equanimity,” an investigation of marriage, friendship, partnership and how humans create beauty amid disagreement and misfortune.
With “Draft No.31,” Cheng, a Taiwanese-American from San Francisco, plays with the physical representation of disparate, unrelated, and inconsequential ideas through movement.
Overall, CrossCurrent is intended to foster creative contemporary dance choreography within the Asian-American community by facilitating cross-cultural dialogue.
In that vein, the festival will also host an in-depth panel discussion with accomplished artists and Nai-Ni Chen herself, in order to provide a more equitable context to discuss dance and its role in the New York City dance communities.
